  • Chamomile has long been a key ingredient in soothing skin care regimens. Even the ancient Greeks and Egyptians applied crushed chamomile flowers to their skin to treat weather-related redness and dryness.

Hundreds of years later, scientific research has found that the compounds in chamomile likely do make it a powerful skin multitasker.

Anti-oxidants fight oxidative stress caused by free radicals, which are the natural result of everyday metabolic processes and inflammation. Oxidative stress is linked to fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging.

Chamomile contains powerful anti-oxidants including polyphenols and phytochemicals. When applied to the skin, it may help reduce signs of aging by protecting the skin from free radical damage. It may accelerate cell and tissue renewal, reducing the appearance of fine lines and giving skin a youthful glow.

Chamomile contains the anti-oxidant apigenin, which aids in lowering inflammation by inhibiting the release of inflammation-causing chemicals.

Chamomile has astringent and brightening properties that, in addition to tightening pores and softening the skin, can fade acne scars and hyperpigmentation when used regularly.

Chamomile has a mild sedative quality that can reduce anxiety and give you a long, blissful sleep

  • Jojoba oil is not as it seems…it looks like an oil and it's nourishing and moisturizing to the skin but if we dig a bit deeper, it turns out that jojoba oil is really special and unique: technically, chemically - it's not an oil but a wax ester. Wax esters are on the outer surface of several plant leaves to give them environmental protection. 25-30% of human sebum is also wax esters to give us environmental protection. Loss is normal in mature skin and common after illness, poor nutrition, as a side effect of certain medications, and following aggressive cleansing or treatment protocols. When our natural sebum production has been compromised and the wax ester depleted, skin can be left feeling and looking dry, tired, and dull.

This is where the golden magic of jojoba comes in. Your skin recognizes the liquid wax produced from the seed of the jojoba plant as similar to its own natural wax ester. When applied topically, skin pores remain open, allowing jojoba to penetrate beyond the epidermis layer, carrying other important nutrients with it. It is in these deeper layers that cell regeneration and cell synthesis occur.

Jojoba naturally contains a balance of vitamins A, B, D, and E which are known as skin healing vitamins, as well as minerals like chromium, copper, and zinc, all of which nourish and protect skin from environmental stressors. Essential fatty acids omega 6 and 9 help to regenerate skin cells and repair damaged skin tissue. Jojoba’s wax ester fills the gaps between skin cells, soothes and slows their metabolism and protects skin against accelerated skin aging. Jojoba is naturally antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and hypoallergenic.

The Rutaceae family, which contains citrus plants, is also a natural source, along with lavender, coriander, palmarosa, ylang-ylang, and sweet orange flowers (neroli). Birch trees and even some fungi produce linalool as well!

Linalool is found in Luna Essence as a result of the inclusion of Lavender Oil

These polyunsaturated fatty acids, which also include oleic, linoleic, palmitic and stearic acids, enhance skin’s hydration by preventing moisture loss.

Linseed oil has been shown to penetrate skin’s uppermost layers easily, carrying other oil soluble beneficial ingredients with it.

Linseed oil is also a top source of antioxidants.

  • Honeybush is extremely rare; it only grows in the mountains just north of the Cape of Good Hope, and, believe it or not, is only grown in the wild. Despite decades of research, honeybush has resisted efforts to cultivate it commercially. This may be due to as-yet-unknown interactions with ants and birds.

Ithas a very high level of antioxidants - in fact, it contains the highest amount of antioxidants of any herbal tea sold.

Honeybush has the highest levels of antioxidants, with an ORAC* of an incredible 2705 / 8fl oz. For comparison, the same amount of matcha tea has an ORAC of 1384, so if it's a superfood drink you want, drink Sol Infusion!

It is low in tannins and doesn’t become bitter with extended simmering or brewing. The longer it’s steeped, the more antioxidants end up in your cup!

This high level of antioxidants contributes to honeybush's immune-support benefits. It is anti-inflammatory, boosts gastrointestinal health, and supports women’s health. Wonderfully, honeybush has no known negative side effects.

This tea is quite soothing, and therefore makes an ideal brew for sleep or unwinding.

*ORAC stands for Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity. This test method was developed by the USDA and Tufts University to assess the antioxidant potency of foods and beverages. Higher numbers contains more antioxidant affects to our body.

  • Rooibos is only grown in a 3000 square-mile area in the Cedarburg Mountains near Cape Town, South Africa.

The high concentration of polyphenolic compounds (micronutrients) in Rooibos is what makes it so sought-after as a health and beauty enhancer. Polyphenols act as antioxidants that protect the body against inflammation. It neutralises harmful free radicals that would otherwise damage cells and cause premature ageing.

It also contains an abundance of the enzyme, superoxide dismutase, which is an effective anti-ageing substance. As such, Rooibos reduces wrinkles and boosts the production of healthy skin cells.

The high flavonoid levels in Rooibos also helps to improve skin disorders like eczema. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties will help to soothe and relieve inflamed skin.

Bio-retinoids can reduce the signs of aging and sun damage, but they are also really effective for those who suffer from breakouts as they can act as an exfoliant.

    Shhh…don’t go and tell everyone!

    Luna Essence contains Rosehip Rubiginosa.

  • Also known as Vitamin E, is the major fat-soluble antioxidant in our skin. As a strong antioxidant it’s an A-player in protecting the skin cells from the nasty little things called free-radicals that want to destroy the lovely collagen that makes our skin nice and firm.

  • Expressed directly from the seeds, this oil has been used not for hundreds but thousands of years. According to The National Sunflower Association, there is evidence that both the plant and its oil were used by American Indians in the area of Arizona and New Mexico about 3000 BC. It's more than 5000 years old!

Sunflower oil - similar to other plant oils - is a great emollient that makes the skin smooth and nice and helps to keep it hydrated. It also protects the surface of the skin and enhances the damaged or irritated skin barrier. Leslie Bauman notes in Cosmetic Dermatology that one application of sunflower oil significantly speeds up the recovery of the skin barrier within an hour and sustains the results 5 hours after using it.
